[SPOILER ALERT: Read on only if you have already watched Sunday’s “Heads Up” episode of The Walking Dead.]
The mystery of whether Glenn was dead or alive finally received an answer on Sunday’s “Heads Up” episode of The Walking Dead.
It was four weeks ago when we last saw Glenn plunging into a mob of zombies, who started gorging on guts shortly thereafter. But as we saw at the start of Sunday’s episode, those were indeed Nicholas’ organs being munched on, and Glenn quickly slid under a dumpster to safety, where he waited until the herd had cleared by the next morning.
Actor Steven Yeun had made no comment whatsoever since Glenn’s fate was called into question, but finally broke his silence on Sunday after the episode aired, with a special message during a commercial break during AMC’s Into the Badlands.
“I’ve been following everything you’ve been saying and it’s meant so much to me to see all of your support and concern for Glenn,” said Yeun during the message. “The Walking Dead has the best fans in the world and I’m happy to be back.”
Yeun also appeared as a guest on Sunday’s Talking Dead, where Chris Hardwick asked him what life has been like since the mystery of his death first took hold. “I have not been out much,” said Yeun. “I frequent a lot of take-out. My apartment looks like a hoarder’s house.”
As for how he feels now that the cat is out of the bag? “I feel relieved. I feel very grateful. I feel so amazed at the response. I feel bad that I couldn’t say anything to everyone and family and friends. I’m pretty sure I’ve lost friendships along the way. But yeah, it’s kind of been overwhelming. I didn’t even really know how to take it all.”
Hardwick also asked Yeun what Glenn’s survival symbolizes. “I think it proves that this world still can take that story of the good guy winning sometimes,” said Yeun. “I really like the fact that it’s not this bent of always seeking out something miserable happening on television or something terrible and sulking on that and rather just really accepting the fact that sometimes good guys survive.”
Yeun said he has been humbled by the reaction of fans to Glenn’s fate being up in the air. “You realize in that moment that you have affected a lot of people at once and that’s something that you don’t really see that often anymore. And especially with what’s going on in the world now it’s nice to have some connection.”
Yeun also spoke about the other big news involving his character – the fact that Maggie is pregnant with their child. “Last season you saw a resolve in Glenn in really accepting what Alexandria was and could be for them. And prior, earlier in the prison, he was really fearful of it. He was kind of running away from the responsibility of that idea. But once he found safety or something that he could fortify his life all he could probably think about was making sure that he could create more life.”
